Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba says ports of entry into the country especially the Beit Bridge Port of entry needs new and improved infrastructure and IT systems.

This is after he visited the bridge on Monday ahead of a busy festive season.

Minister Gigaba said more personnel’s have been deployed at the port for the high volume of people who will be crossing the boarder.

He said the challenges we have to face at the boarder post is increase in corruption, crime, human trafficking and human smuggling as well as an increase in traffic flows which means that we need to engage more staff to be able to manage those volumes of people.

Meanwhile Minister Gigaba said there has been a reduction in crime and corruption at the Beit Bridge Port of entry; however more needs to be done.

The department has also extended the hours at ports of entry across the country.

Minister Gigaba said the Boarder Management Agency is going to resolve all the issues that we are facing because it is going to deal with the problems which have been an issue at our ports of entry.

“These include the management of the ports of entry themselves as well as the management of boarder line.  It will replace the South African National Defence Force in terms of the management of the boarder line” Gigaba added.
