19 Cyclists have been hospitalised after taking part in the Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour yesterday.
The Joint Operations Manager for the event, Brad Geyser said 71 cyclists’ had been picked up by ambulance during the race of which 32 were admitted to hospital and 19 stayed overnight.
The rest were discharged after treatment.
Geyser says the number is lower than last year.
The injured cyclist sustained mainly fractures, scalp lacerations and clavicle breaks.
There were only a handful of serious cases where patients had to be resuscitated after experiencing shortness of breath or chest pains.
Medscheme's Arran Brown won the cycle tour in two hours 46 minutes 32 seconds while Swedish national team rider, Jennie Stenerhag, won the women’s race in 3 hours 6minutes and one second.
