Six nurses at Malmesbury prison have been suspended for refusing to stick to a new work schedule.
The Correctional Services department said the nurses allegedly refused to work flexible hours over a seven-day work week, as recently agreed between the government and unions.
“The work schedule required the nurses to work a 40 hour week and includes shifts on weekends,” said Departmental spokesperson Manelisi Wolela.
Nurses from other prisons have been sent to Malmesbury to assist.
Wolela said the seven day working week is aimed at doing away with an unsustainable R1, 3 billion annual overtime bill and will help implement a structured day programme for offenders.

That is a lot of hogwash! These nurses are suspended for insisting that they have a right to be consulted before a change in their shift can be effected.
The so called agreement reached with the unions is applicable to the Correctional officers, and was concluded at the General Public Service Bargaining Council (GPSSBC). Nurses, and other health officials in the Deaprtment of Correctional Services, are covered by the scope of the Public Health and Social Development Bargaining Council (PHSDBC), and this matter was never discussed at the PHSDBC.
In short the deaprtmental spin doctor is misleading the nation.
