The deputy president of the South African National Taxi Council’s (SANTACO) has been gunned down near his home in Evaton south of Johannesburg last night.
57 year old Mthuthuzeli Molefe was riding his motorbike when he was killed metres away from his house.
Police found six 9mm gun cartridges scattered at the scene.
It is believed that the gunmen fled the scene in a silver-grey car.
No arrests have been made.
Police are investigating weather the killing was linked to the Bus Rapid Transit system launched earlier this week, or to his involvement in the Evaton Urban Renewal Project.
Santaco and government are still in talks over the taxi industry’s role in BRT projects after it raised concerns that its introduction will affect the livelihood of taxi operators.
