The Western Cape cabinet has agreed to declare the drought-stricken Eden district of the South Cape a disaster area.
This follows a request by environmental affairs MEC Anton Bredell. Dams in the area have fallen to dangerously low levels.
Locals say it is the worst drought in over 130 years.
Bredell has organised a grant of 53-million-Rands for the area from the National Treasury to counter the effects of the drought. Eden includes Mossel Bay, George and Knysna.
