More than two hundred and thirty one shebeens were closed down and four licensed outlets issued with fines for not complying with the rules in Gugulethu.
The operation started on the 30th of December 2009 up until the 3rd of January 2010.
Police spokesperson Captain Elliot Sinyangana says the clamping down of shebeens produced good results in terms of serious crime reported in the area.
“A 19yr old adult was arrested for illegal dealing with alcohol); thirteen different types of samples were taken as exhibits and officially submitted in the police station.
“In another search conducted at NY 116, on 30 December 2009 at about 22:10, a 49yr old man was arrested for interfering with police whilst performing their duties; he literally refused to be searched after police requested permission to search him and became unruly,” said police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana.
Sinyangana added that the total number of people arrested over the weekend was 60 for different types of crimes and all due to appear at Fezeka Community court, Philippi and Athlone Magistrate courts.
