Surgeons at Johannesburg’s Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital's neo-natal unit today started the first phase of the surgery on nine day old baby Ashleigh Louw, who was born with her heart outside her body.
The operation will close the defect in her abdomen wall, the defect in her diaphragm and the defect in her breast bone.
Defects inside the heart will be treated at a later stage.
Ashleigh’s extremely rare abnormality affects one in a million babies.
