A family of four returning from their Knysna holiday, died on Saturday after the car they were travelling in hit a tree on the N1 north highway near the Grasmere toll plaza, Johannesburg Metro police said.
Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar says it appears that the driver of the vehicle lost control of the car and hit a tree on the side of the road.
He said the impact was so great that the car split in half.
The mother, father and their two teenage children died in the accident.
The family were on their way home to Pretoria from Knysna.
