Following taxi violence that recently erupted in Vrygrond, Steeberg and Retreat , Minister of Transport in the Western Cape Robin Carlisle, will implement a stringent policy that will combat taxi violence.
Last week, Steenberg and Retreat Taxi Association members were threatened with firearms; a Steenberg driver and his passenger were shot and seriously wounded, and random shots were shot on Retreat and Steenberg taxis.
Carlisle says in a statement: “This cycle of violence has become the standard method for certain elements to get operating licences; routes and other favours.”
He added that if it is not stopped, violence will be rife in the taxi industry.
“No concession whatsoever will be made to any member; association or grouping in the taxi industry based on acts of violence or threats of violence.
“In future, where taxi violence occurs or is threatened, the minister believes that continued taxi operations in a particular area are a risk to the safety of any person, he will effectively shut down operations in that area. These operations will remain shut for as long as takes to restore stability to that area,” says spokesperson Solomon Malatsi.
In a statement the Carlisle adds that he is committed to do what it takes for the violence in the taxi industry to end.
“ I will relentlessly pursue all criminal transgressions resulting in that instability and work together with the applicable enforcement entities to ensure that those involved in criminal activities are brought to book,” says Carlile.
