Widespread rain in several provinces has prompted traffic authorities to warn motorists to drive with extreme care.

This comes as holiday-makers begin returning home.

Widespread showers and thundershowers have been experienced over Gauteng, the Free State, the Northern Cape, North West and KwaZulu-Natal.

It drizzled over the Cape Peninsula this morning.

Although the road death toll was lower than for the same month last year, more than a thousand people were killed on the roads during December.
