President Jacob Zuma may be considering a presidential pardon for convicted apartheid-era police hit squad commander Eugene de Kock.
The media reports that Zuma met De Kock during a secret visit to the Pretoria Central Prison in April last year.
De Kock, dubbed “Prime Evil”, was a commander of the Vlakplaas counter-insurgency base.
This was the home of so-called "death squads" which murdered anti-apartheid activists.
De Kock alledgely gave Zuma information about the involvement of other people who were not prosecuted.
