African civil society will march in the streets of Dar Es Salaam today, demanding that leaders keep to their HIV promises as Global Finance leaders meet in the Tanzanian capital to map out economic growth for the continent as part of the World Economic Forum debate.
Donors and African governments are making callous and unwise decisions on funding commitments to HIV and global health.
This is according to a group of African health and human rights activists gathered at a three day forum in Dar Es Salaam, to carry out strategic planning and advocacy in the lead up to the World Economic Forum in Africa.
Africa Regional Coordinator of the World AIDS Campaign, Linda Mafu says this event takes place at a time when donors and governments are making important decisions about their responses and commitments to HIV.
Mafu adds in 2001 African Governments made a pledge to commit 15% of GDP to spending on Health - to date most countries are woefully short, putting millions of lives at risk.
The forum organised by the AIDS and Rights Alliance for Southern Africa in partnership with the World AIDS Campaign and the Treatment Action Campaign saw 10 African countries in attendance.
