Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union say they fully support a strike by the National Union of Mine Workers saying the workers are both calling for reasonable wages.
Samwu spokesperson Tahir Sema says workers deserve decent salaries because most households suffer from poverty. “We believe there is nothing wrong with demanding double digit increases.
“SAMWU calls upon all workers across all sectors to stand up against monopoly capital and ensure that workers in this country earn a decent living wage,” said Sema.
Meanwhile a group of striking members of the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa have gathered in Newtown in preparation for a march to their employer’s office.
The march is part of a nationwide strike by over 200,000 Numsa members.
