The South African Local Government Association says municipalities cannot afford the 18-percent pay rise demand of municipal workers.
Samwu is threatening a national strike which could cause huge disruption from Monday if last minute talks don’t resolve the deadlock.
The employers are offering just more than six-percent.
Salga says to meet the union’s demand; rates and taxes would have to be increased, opposing the salary increase.
