Chief justice nominee Mogoeng Mogoeng says his independence as a judge will supersede his church’s views on homosexuality.

During questioning at a special sitting of the Judicial Service Committee in Cape Town, Mogoeng said the position of the church to which he belongs, the Winners Chapel International, is similar to that of almost all Christian churches and religions, to which many other judges belong.

He says his church’s views are not founded on homophobia, but on the Biblical injunction that a man should marry a woman.

Critics have labelled Mogoeng anti-gay, based on previous judgements
