Chief justice nominee Mogoeng Mogoeng has defended his independence by saying he has in the past ruled against the ANC, against the premier of North West and against other government departments.

Mogoeng is being grilled at a special sitting of the Judicial Service Committee in Cape Town following his nomination by President Jacob Zuma.

He insists he has "no relationship whatsoever" with Zuma. He says he has met Zuma four times in total in which they spoke twice.
