The Demcratic Alliance today said that police Minster Nathi Mthethwa must explain why his figures for police officers without drivers license don’t add up to recent information provided by provincial police in Geuteng and KZN.

DA shadow minister of policing Dianne Kohler Barnard said the difference in the national and provincial figures raises concerns about the credibility of the Ministers reply.

Kohler Barnard added that it also leads to questions about possible manipulation of information to avoid further political embarrassment for a Department besieged by one PR disaster after the other.

She furthermore added that in replies to DA questions in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provincial legislatures show that there are 18 304 police officers without licenses in these two provinces.

“The South African Police Service in these two provinces alone have almost 2000 more police officers without licenses than the national figure provided by the Minister in a reply to my parliamentary question,” said Kohler Barnard
