On Tuesday MEC of Health in the Western Cape Theuns Botha opened a new psychiatry unit for adolescent patients at Tygerberg hospital.

The unit is the first dedicated adolescent psychiatry assessment unit in the Western Cape.

The unit can admit around 200 patients, between the ages of 13 and 18 years, per annum.

Spokesperson Helene Rossouw said the new unit means that nursing programmes can now be tailored specifically for adolescents and opportunities for unwanted interactions between adult and minor patients has been eradicated.

Rossouw added that this unit will focus mainly on treating people with specific mental problems and it cost about R9.7 million.
