Today the Democratic Alliance requested that the South African Council of Education be called to account to committee on cases involving the rape and abuse of children by educators.

The DA said for the 2010-2012 period there were 266 reported sexual abuse related complaints.

DA Shadow Minister of Basic Education Annette Lovemore said that 40 of the cases that were left un-investigated.

“Some of the cases had been investigated and the teachers been found guilty and had been placed back in the school where they had perpetrated the rape” Lovemore said.

Lovemore said that Anene Booysen had not been raped and died in vain, as the Department will make every effort in ensuring that young girls are safe at school.
