The Democratic Alliance on Friday said the Department of Justice is not taking the safety of children seriously.

In a response to a recent DA parliamentary question Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Jeff Radebe revealed that 155 people convicted of crimes against children since November 2011, have been found unsuitable to work with children and have been added to the Child Protection Register.

DA MP of Social Development Mike Waters said over 50,688 reported crimes against children in the past financial year alone.

Waters added that the DA is dismay at the fact that only155 people have been found unsuitable to work with children.

“National Prosecuting Authority’s has failed provide Parliament and the public with a conviction rate for these crimes.” Added Waters.
