The African National Congress in the Western Cape has condemned the illegal evictions of squatters in Phillipi by the provincial government.

The Anti-Land Invasion Unit demolished the homes of 125 people who had unlawfully occupied land in Phillipi.

ANC’s Phillip Dexter said this is nothing new because they have seen this throughout the province, that the DA has been evicting people and switching off services.

Dexter added that the ANC will be holding a meeting with residents in the area to help assist them with the situation.

Meanwhile the MEC of Human Settlements Bonginkosi Madikizela said the city is having a huge problem with people occupying illegal land.

Madikizela added that when people occupy land illegally it complicates the department’s mandate of building more houses for the poor.

Madikizela also said people are taking chances now especially as we are heading to the elections.
