It has been alleged that Metrorail security guards burnt down 50 stalls belonging to hawkers at the Khayelitsha train station.

However Regional Manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz said this was not true.

Swartz added that some hawkers who were trading in places that contravened the Metrorail licenses security guards confiscated their tables and not their goods as it was reported.

Swartz further said it is the company’s responsibility in keeping with the licence conditions that hawkers are not allowed, however the company does not condone violence.

He added that the tables that were taken from the hawkers are kept for the hawkers to go and released them upon the payment a fine but they will not be allowed to trade illegally.
