Metrorail in the Western Cape has announced that as from the 1st of June fares will increase.

Regional Manager Mthuthuzeli Swartz said factors like the cost of energy, personnel maintenance material, safety-critical and statutory compliance contributed to the increase.

Swartz added that government subsidy was unattainable.

Swartz further said Metrorail last year promised that they would keep the increases in single digits and that promised has been kept.

Metrorail last increase their fares in 2012.

He added that the good news to the commuters is that the increases average 50 cent and R1,which that is a relief for low income earners.
