A Cape Town parent is outraged after her son was punished by the school he attends for cutting his hair too short.

The Grade 8 pupil from Table View High was given detention for cutting his hair.

It was today reported that the school’s code of conduct states that boys’ hair may not be completely shaved off.

Provincial Department of Education Spokesperson Bronagh Casey said the department of basic education has published guidelines on draft of codes and conduct and dress codes that enclosed the need to respect certain practices such as religious and cultural practices.

Casey added that the department has also provided training to SGB on their roles and responsibilities following the SGB elections last year.

“And theses roles and responsibilities including drafting the codes of conduct and dress codes for schools should be in line with the constitutional values and the law.
