The Social Justice Coalition has finally released the long awaited report into the Khayelitsha Mshengu Toilet Social Audit. From the 22nd to the 26th of April the SJC conducted a social audit of chemical toilets in four of Khayelitsha’s informal settlement.
In the report it states that the
City of Cape Town paid
Mshengu Services R126 million between 2010 and 2013 for the provision and
maintenance of chemical toilets in the city’s informal settlements, yet many of
the services that were paid for were simply not being delivered.
SJC’s Axolile Notywala said they had
a public hearing with the City of Cape Town and
Mshengu Services to present the summary of the report.
Notywala said Mayor Patricia de
Lille has written a statement saying the city will look carefully into the
Mshengu contract and how the service has been going.
SJC’s Axolile Notywala said this is
a great step forward for communities who are trying to help government monitor
services, because a lot of money is wasted when services are not being
performed by services providers.
