The Cape Town Press Club has called on everybody involved in the media to reflect on what has been achieved in the search for media freedom, as this day May 3rd marks World Press Freedom Day.
The theme for this year’s 20th Anniversary of World Press Freedom Day is ‘Safe to Speak: Securing Freedom of Expression in All Media’.
Executive Director of the Freedom of Expression Institute Phenyo Butale said this day comes at a critical time in the history of media in South Africa following the passing of the State of Information Bill .
The United Nations said this day particularly puts in the spotlight issues of safety of journalists, combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression and securing a free and open internet.
