11 year child drowns in Monwabisi Tidal Pool

NSRI Strandfontein duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority following reports from Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services that they had been alerted and were responding to reports of a drowning incident at the Monwabisi Tidal Pool suspected to be a child missing under water.

NSRI Strandfontein rescue swimmers, WC Government Health EMS rescue dive squad and an EMS ambulance, the SA Police Services and a Police Dive Unit and Law Enforcement responded to join Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services. 
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said on arrival on-scene it was confirmed by a Khayelitsha family that earlier in the evening their 11 year old boy had failed to exit the tidal pool after going swimming and was now missing and suspected by them to be missing in the tidal pool.

Lambinon said NSRI rescue swimmers, EMS rescue divers, Fire and Rescue Services rescue divers and Police divers commenced a coordinated sweeping line search walking and free diving in the tidal pool and during the search the body of the child was located and recovered from under water.

Lambinon said the body of the child has been handed into the care of the Forensic Pathology Services and Police have opened an inquest docket.
