Ninteen people died in the Western Cape roads

Western Cape Traffic Authorities conducted 24 roadblocks across the province this past weekend and 2 126 vehicles were stopped and checked.

 158 drivers were tested for alcohol and 26 drunken drivers were arrested during the roadblocks.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the highest reading was recorded in the Oudtshoorn area with a reading of 1.29 mg/1000 ml.

Africa added that the total amount of fines that we issued in these roadblocks is R339 800 and the highest speed recorded in the province since Friday was a 155km/h in a 120km/h on the N2 Mossel Bay and 112km/h in a 100km/h zone in Oudtshoorn.

Meanwhile over the weekend 19 fatalities were recorded on the province roads.

Provincial Traffic Chief Kenny Africa has urged motorists to not drink and drive and to buckle up. 

Africa said 80 percent of fatalities occur because people do not wear their safety belts.

He emphasized that six pedestrians lost their lives in our roads one in Cape Town, Kuilriver, Table View,Gugulethu, Pearl and Kraaifontein 

“We had seven drivers who got killed in motor vehicle accidents and six passengers. One of the most gruesome accident that we experienced was Friday evening on the West Coast road before Vredenberg, where three vehicles collided leaving four people losing their lives,”  Africa added.
