A nationwide police hunt is on for a gang using commercial explosives to blow up 40 automatic teller machine and retailer’s safes.
According to the Weekend Argus, high-level meetings are being held by police to stop the early morning ATM and safe busters by co-ordinating the investigation following attacks in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal, North-West, Free State, Limpopo and Mpumalanga.
The gang has been operating for the past two years, targeting ATM’s and businesses in outlying areas.
It is clear that the perpetrators are trained in handling explosives.
According to the report, the South African Banking Risk Information Centre said it was taking the matter incredibly seriously and was working closely with the police.
