Six dead in head-on collision

Six people have been killed in a head-on collision on Baden Powell Drive near Stellenbosch in the Boland.

The accident happened in dense fog near the Spier wine estate this morning.

Two people were rushed to hospital in a critical condition. One of the critical patients was believed to have been ejected from a veand sustained multiple injuries.

ER24’s Tristan Wadeley said the male patient was unconscious on arrival of emergency services.

Paramedics worked hard to stabilise the patient before transporting him to Tygerberg Hospital by ER24 ambulance.

“The other critical patient, also a male, was trapped in the front passenger seat of the Polo and needed to be cut out of the vehicle by rescue crews from the fire department and Metro Rescue.”

The patient was taken to Stellenbosch Provincial Hospital by Metro EMS ambulance.

The six deceased were still trapped in the vehicles and needed to be extricated by rescue crews.

“It is alleged that the vehicles collided head-on, paramedics on the scene said there was heavy mist and visibility was poor.”

The South African Police Service were in attendance and will be investigating the incident.

Baden Powell Drive was closed in both directions while rescue crews worked.
