City cracks down on drunk drivers and road offenders

The City’s Traffic Services has been successful in yet another operation clamping down on drunk drivers at a roadblock in Nyanga this weekend.

"Twenty-one motorists were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol of which one was sought by the South African Police Services for house-breaking," says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.

Provincial Traffic, Metro Police and SAPS also held joint operations along the N2 to mark the start of Women’s Month.

The City’s female officers arrested another motorist for alleged drunk driving as well as six others on 13 warrants for outstanding traffic fines worth R14 160.00

"The Ghost Squad also held another drag racing operation in Athlone and arrested two drivers for reckless or negligent driving when they exceeded the 100 km/h speed limit on the M5.

“A motorcyclist who participated in drag racing was arrested for being in possession of a stolen motor cycle and drugs (tik)," Lourens said.

A further 116 other traffic fines were also issued and 82 warrants of arrest were served on 27 people who owed the City R69 460.00.

Seven hundred speeding cases were recorded with the highest speed measuring 181 km/h on Vanguard Drive between Viking Way and Bofors Circle, Epping; and 396 speeding cases were registered on Kromboom Parkway.
