The Department of Water and Environmental affairs is to announce the cleanest town this afternoon in its Cleanest Town Competition.
Minister Buyelwa Sonjica is expected to name the winner at a gala ceremony to be held at Velmore Hotel and Conference Estate in Pretoria this evening.
The competition which comprises of two categories for municipalities, namely metropolitan and local municipalities was launched by former Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, Valli Moosa.
The competition intends to change the public’s attitude by raising awareness and educating communities on good waste management practices as well as to acknowledge ongoing improvements in waste management initiatives.
Recently addressing the local government Indaba on the environment in Gauteng, Minister Sonjica said compliance with the requirements of the Act will contribute to job creation with emphasis on waste collection initiatives involving SMMEs and recycling businesses.
