With tough economic times parents find themselves battling to pay their debts and this seems to have put school fees low on their list.
Schools across the province say some parents are unemployed and can't pay, some just fail to pay, while others will pay at the end of the year.
Media reports that Cape Town schools are facing a financial meltdown as parents battle to pay fees amid renewed calls to scrap them.
This lead to SA Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) calling for the abolishment of school fees.
Yesterday the station spoke to the SADTU’s Western Cape Secretary General Jonavon Rustin about the issue.
“As Sadtu we’ve been always calling for the scrapping of school fees for learners completely,” he said.
Rustin added that they call for education to be made free and compulsory for learners.
He says they understand what the economic crisis does to parents and thus they call for government intervention so that learners should not be disadvantaged because they can’t afford fees.
