Twenty people were arrested after two tons of copper cables were recovered by the city’s Copperheads outside Somerset West on Friday.

The Copper Theft Task Team was helped by the Chris Nissen community, who pointed out where the alleged thieves lived.

The replacement value of the cabling is more than R1 million and it could have been sold for around R54 000 at a local scrapyard.

A scrap dealer was also fined R1 000 for dealing in stolen property.

The copper thieves had stolen the cables from an incomplete housing development close by.

The 20 suspects, three women and 17 men, will appear in the Somerset West Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of possession of stolen goods.
