The newly reconstructed Cape Town Stadium, formerly known as Green Point Stadium will stage its first event during a Soccer Festival later this month.

Exciting soccer and music will be the main features when the brand-new Stadium hosts its first event.

The soccer festival will show case the music of the well-known Freshlyground and a Cape Derby between the Mother City's two PSL sides, Santos and Ajax Cape Town.

The R4.5-billion multi-purpose stadium has green features to help save water and energy and to be environmentally friendly.

A report by the Environmental Affairs and Tourism Department found that the Cape Town Stadium meets high standards of environmental protection and sustainability.

The event is hosted by the City of Cape Town in association with its official sponsors Virgin Active Clubs and MTN.

About 20 000 tickets will be sold for the event as the operators seek to test the stadium’s systems and processes by slowly building up to the full 68 000 capacity.

More than 2,500 workers were employed on site during construction, and almost 1,200 artisans received training from the contractors.
