A person was fatally injured in an accident involving an Isuzu Bakkie at the intersection of Carson Street in Durbanville.
ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson says according to bystanders the bakkie was traveling at a high speed and they also say that the driver seemed to be driving recklessly, and he was not keeping to his side of the single lane carriageway.
“In the bakkie were five people; the male driver in his fourties, his six year old daughter who was sitting in the back under the canopy, and another three adults including one woman.
An old shape Volkswagen Beetle was traveling in the other direction when they were collided with head on by the bakkie. The Beetle was mangled, but luckily the three male occupants in their thirties were not seriously harmed,” said Jackson.
Jackson added that after the massive impact, the bakkie allegedly rolled, ejecting the driver through his right drivers window. As he lay on the ground with critical injuries, the bakkie come to a stop on top of him.
“The bakkies canopy was badly deformed and came off the bakkie when it began to roll, but fortunately the six year old girl sustained no physical injuries.
ER24 paramedics said that she was not crying, but her eyes showed the trauma that she had experienced. They took her to the ambulance to treat her for shock,” said Jackson.
Jackson adds that a woman who was also in the bakkie sustained moderate injuries, and also a large amount of skin loss to her arm. She and the two other gentlemen in the bakkie were transported to hospital.
The Durbanville SAPS will handle the investigation into the exact cause of the incident.
