The South African Local Government Association has urged Water Affairs Minister Buyelwa Sonjica to carefully scrutinise proposed water tariff increases as they are unjustifiable.
Water boards have submitted tariff increases ranging from six-point-two-percent to 43-percent to Parliament. In addition, areas under the Amatola water board in the Eastern Cape face a 107-percent increase.
Salga says municipalities can’t afford huge water increases as the economy is only beginning to recover from the recent recession.
