The Independent Democrats has denied that any firm agreement has been reached about joining forces with the Democratic Alliance.
Reports said ID leader Patricia de Lille was expected to be elected to one of the DA's two top posts along with Helen Zille.
But De Lille says the goal of the story was obviously to sow confusion amongst ID supporters and members.
She says there is no firm agreement yet with the DA, the Congress of the People and the United Democratic Movement.
She has reiterated that if the merger goes on ID supporters will be the first ones to know.
