Media reports say more than 500 Du Noon residents have been left homeless following a fire that gutted their shacks in the early hours of this morning.
More than 100 shacks in the informal settlement settlement in Miltnerton were gutted by the flames.
In the incident one person was burnt beyond recognition on arrival of fire services on the scene.
Disaster Management’s Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says officials are present on the scene.
He says it is not clear what caused the blaze.
Meanwhile, two elderly residents at a Paarl old age home died in a fire last night.
The fire broke out at the Rusthof old age home.
Other residents were evacuated and five of them were hospitalised for smoke inhalation. It is believed the fire broke out in the frail care section of the facility, which was badly damaged in the blaze.
Social Development MEC Ivan Meyer visited the centre to assess the extent of the damage.
