DA wants details of how much departments spent on car hire

The Democratic Alliance is complaining that just five of the 34 ministers have comprehensively provided details of how much they have spent on car hire since March last year.

DA Member of Parliament Ian Ollis says Tourism, Public Works, Arts and Culture, Mineral Resources, and Trade and Industry combined spent more almost 1-million-200-thousand-Rands on car hire.

Ollis now wants to know why Deputy Arts and Culture Minister Joe Phaahla had to hire a luxury four-by-four for R17 000 for a two-day trip in KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, the new DA mayor of the Bitou municipality in the Southern Cape, Memory Booysen, has decided not to use his ANC predecessor's luxury BMW.

Booysen says Plettenberg Bay’s precarious financial situation makes it ridiculous to be spending R28 000 a month of taxpayers’ money on leasing such a luxury vehicle.

Booysen says he will drive his 10-year-old Mazda 323 until ratepayers approve a suitably priced alternative vehicle.
