Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa has urged anyone, particularly the Independent Newspapers group, to present evidence or information regarding the reported imminent arrest of the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
Mthethwa says he and National Commissioner Bheki Cele know nothing of the alleged plans and Madonsela also confirmed to him that she only learnt of it through the media.
The Minister is concerned that someone may be out to discredit the police, something he says they will not take lightly.
Meanwhile, the importance of police maintaining fairness when dealing with complaints from different communities has been stressed at a Human Rights Commission conference in Johannesburg.
André Faull, a researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, says fairness breeds a culture of trust and respect.
Faull told says the tougher police stance being advocated in some political quarters was not what communities want.
Faull told the summit that a heavy handed approach to crime prevention only solicited a negative response from the public.
