The National Union of Metalworkers says the 13% increase they are demanding won’t be enough to cushion workers against increases in the costs of food, electricity, education, water and fuel.
Free State regional Numsa secretary Andile Zitho says the 13% is a matter of life and death.
Employers in the sector are offering 7%.
The Steel and Engineering Industries' Federation has said its members won’t be able to afford to pay more.
But Zitho rejects the argument as "ridiculous", claiming that some senior managers are earning 20-times more than union members.
