President Jacob Zuma has praised his predecessor Thabo Mbeki for his contribution to the independence of South Sudan.
The world’s newest country was born at midnight last night after decades of civil war with its northern counterpart. In the January referendum, its eight-million inhabitants voted overwhelmingly to break away.
Following the death of more than two-million people in the civil war, independence day is today being celebrated in the Republic of Southern Sudan.
Zuma began his visit in Khartoum yesterday evening, to express South Africa’s support to the north and to strengthen bilateral relations and co-operation.
