Thirteen drivers have been arrested over the weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol by the city’s traffic officers.

Western Cape Community Safety spokesperson Jo Lennox says over 2863 vehicles with 1487 drivers screened for being under suspicion of the offence.

“The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay, which was more than four times the legal limit.

“On the N2 near Duinefontein in the direction of Somerset West a man lost his life on Friday evening after losing control of his vehicle and last night, a male pedestrian lost his life on the N1 near Klapmuts, said Lennox.

She says speed is a major contributing factor to road traffic incidents has appealed to motorists to consider not only their own safety, but also that of others.
