Friday to be a day of prayer for road safety

Western Cape transport MEC Robin Carlisle has vowed to introduce tougher measures to try and prevent the carnage on the stretch of the N-1 between Beaufort West and Laingsburg in the Karoo.

This follows yesterday’s horror crash on the so-called Road of Death, which claimed 20 lives, including those of two children.

Carlisle says he is particularly concerned about fully loaded taxis travelling, often with packed trailers, at 100-kilometres per hour.

Meanwhile Transport Minister Sibusiso Ndebele has called on all South Africans to observe Friday as National Day of Prayer for Road Safety.

Nearly one-point-three-million people lost their lives on the world’s roads this year.
