A local professor has had a breakthrough in his research which will help fight major gastro-intestinal infections.

Professor Leon Dicks from the Department of Microbiology at the University of Stellenbosch has recently been awarded the prestigious TW Kambule Award for his contribution to science.

Dicks explained why the new probiotic strain is more effective in fighting diseases than traditional probiotics.

He said that the entire probotic has a built in killing mechanism that kills the pathogens in the gut, by shooting out little bullets to the pathogens, killing them.

He said it is really unique and completely different to other probiotics on the market.
