A gas explosion at Atlas Gardens in Durbanville on Wednesday afternoon left two people dead.

Global Gases was contracted to conduct repair work on a compressor inside the factory.

It has been established that the windows of the factory had blown out and sections of the corrugated iron roof had been ripped off after a compressor and gas cylinders exploded.

Head of Public Awareness and Preparedness at the Disaster Risk Managemnet Centre Charlotte Powell said the cause which led to this accident is still not known.

Powell said the police have launched an investigation.
