Cape
Town was the 27th most violent city
in the world. Mayoral Committee Member
for Safety and Security JP Smith said the statistics were unreliable and a
distortion of the facts on the ground.
The City of Cape
Town has dismissed a study ranking Cape
Town as one of the most violent cities in the
world.
The study was done by Citizen
Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice, a Mexican-based NGO.
Smith said whilst there certain South African Cities
with very high crime rates and as South Africa with a high overall crime rate it
must be remembered that Cape Town and the other South African Cities are by no
means the most violent Cities in Africa.
Smith added that the research
document in Spanish points out that most African countries do not have crime
states available or even vaguely reliable crime states while they know there
are is crime.
