DA wants names of people unsuitable to work with children uploaded

The Democratic Alliance says it has been informed by the Acting Deputy Director of Welfare Services in the Department of Social Development, Conny Nxumalo, that there are only 305 names on the Child Protection Register.

The DA Member of Parliament Mike Waters said this is 133 less than there were last year and a far cry from the thousands of potential names that should be on the list.

Waters said that last year, he laid a charge with the South African Human Rights Commission on the Department of Social Developments’ failure to upload names of people who have been prosecuted of serious crimes and crimes against children.

“I will also be taking up the matter with the chairperson of the portfolio committee of Social Development in Parliament, requesting that she summons the minister to explain why her department is failing the children of South Africa” Waters added.
