Five arrested after robbery in a community hall pay-out point

An investigation is underway after police members from Mitchell’s Plain, Nyanga, Flying Squad and the Technical Response Team arrested five suspects in Mitchells’ Plain.

Police Spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the arrests follow an armed robbery in a cash pay-out point in a community hall yesterday.

It is alleged that the men entered the hall with hand guns and a rifle.

They fired shots in the hall, overpowering security guards and fled with undisclosed amount of money.

Van Wyk said the suspects abandoned the car between Gugulethu and Nyanga, where they hijacked a vehicle which was transporting school children, the children were dropped off unharmed in lower Cross Roads.

“Members from TRT spotted the suspects and a high-speed car chase ensued.

“The suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fired shots at the police who returned fire; five suspects were arrested of which one was wounded” van Wyk added.

Van Wyk also said that none of the police members or civilians was hurt, and the suspects will appear in court soon.

They will be charged for armed robbery, attempted murder, hijacking, pointing a fire arm, being in possession of a stolen vehicle, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

The injured suspect was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
